MD Podiatrist Discusses Back to School Shoe Shopping

Daniel D. Michaels, DPM, is giving tips to parents on back to school shoe shopping. Dr. Michaels emphasizes how important it is to visit his practice when parents notice odd wear patterns on shoes. He states this leads to important diagnoses of conditions such as flatfeet and rotational abnormalities.

According to Michaels, “Shopping for shoes at the end of the day is recommended, especially if you are buying athletic shoes that will be worn at the end of the day for sports. Kids' feet swell during these activities so having proper fitting shoes is very important.” Michaels also talked about how even nail fungus in kids can be caused by ill-fitting shoes. “Kids sometimes have differing shoe sizes from foot to foot. Unilateral toenail fungus in a child can be a sign that a child might have two different foot sizes."
