Summer Shoes

HAGERSTOWN - The temperatures are rising and that means sandals will be a popular choice. From gladiators to flip flops, all sandals will be selling like hot cakes.

"Flip flops are the number one, always. Flip flops, that's the one style of shoe our customer will buy multiple colors of and multiple pairs," says Matt Willard of Super Shoes.

As you are getting ready to strap on your summer sandals you might want to think again

"The foot has a natural arch so it would flatten and stretch out all the soft issues and nerves and joints cant absorb shock like they should when wearing a supportive shoe such as this," says Dr. Michaels of
Reconstructive Foot and Ankle.

Flip flops don't have the support needed for the arch of the foot so when you are packing your bags for that tropical vacation, keep a few things in mind.

"If you are going to the beach and have a week-long vacation and want to wear your flip flops a lot that's fine, but you may want to take a day or two off and wear tennis shoes," says Dr. Michaels.

"There a lot of walking shoes getting sold this of year. Apparently boardwalks are always in summer trips," says Willards

The dangers associated with abusing the sandals are tendon tears, tendon ruptures and foot and ankle pain.

Certain people should be more careful than others

People who are more overweight are more prone to problems and children are more prone as their bones are not totally formed and can get inflammation on the foot", says Michaels.

To avoid a hassle and possibly a foot injury during the summer it is recommended that you alternate sandals with a good shoe every now and then.

"Squeeze the heel counter and if it's firm it's a sign that it's a good shoe. If it doesn't twist easily, that's a good shoe," says Michaels.
